Beginner’s Guide to Entry

Thinking about participating in the Kensworth Flower and Vegetable Show but unsure where to begin? This beginner’s guide will provide you with all the essential information to ensure your first experience is a triumph!

The Kensworth Flower and Vegetable Show includes a wide range of categories, such as: Vegetables,  Fruit, Flowers, Pot Plants, Young Persons Crafts, Cooking & Preserves and Flower Arrangements 

Top Tip: Review the official show schedule for a complete list of categories and specific rules for each. This will assist you in deciding which sections to enter. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a committee member for guidance.

Entries are open from 1st May, giving you plenty of time to ask questions from committee members.

Pick your finest produce and blooms. Look for:

  • Uniformity: Ensure your vegetables or flowers are similar in size and shape. 
  • Condition: They should be fresh, clean, and free from blemishes or pests. 
  • Presentation: Carefully arrange your display to showcase the best features. 

Top Tip: If you’re entering multiple categories, vary your selections to enhance your chances of winning!

  • Vegetables: Clean them gently but avoid over-washing. Trim leaves neatly. 
  • Flowers: Cut them the day before and keep them well-hydrated overnight. 
  • Floral Arrangements: Plan your design in advance and practice the layout at home. 

Top Tip: Clearly and simply label your entries according to the show’s guidelines.

  • Use plain plates or vases provided to keep the focus on your entries. 
  • Arrange vegetables in neat rows or circles for a polished look. 
  • Position flowers to face forward and ensure they are evenly spaced.
  • Arrive early (open to exhibitors from 10 am to 11:15) to  to set up without any rush. 
  • Verify that your entries adhere to the category rules. 
  • Judging notes may be made on cards to help enhance your performance next year.
  • Celebrate any achievements and take note of judges’ comments for future competitions. 
  • Network with fellow participants and learn from their experiences. 
  • Don’t be disheartened if you don’t win—view it as motivation to improve!
  • Browse photos from previous shows on www.kensworthflowerandveg.org.uk to grasp the competition and understand what judges look for. 
  • Begin preparing your garden or crafts several weeks in advance. 
  • Keep the experience enjoyable and embrace the community spirit of the event!

Joining the Kensworth Flower and Vegetable Show is an excellent opportunity to showcase your gardening skills, creativity, and dedication, whilst meeting and learning from other local exhibitors.
